The Hydrogen Fuels Training and Education Research and Outreach Project

This new program is part of an ongoing partnership between the IAFC and the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA);  the project is funded by the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA). The objective of the project is to research and examine distance-learning training systems and strategies focused on hydrogen and hydrogen fuel cell technologies and then apply to the findings from the research into the design and implementation of a hazardous materials distance-learning training system.

 Hydrogen Response Considerations

The Hydrogen Response Considerations program is a two hour awareness training program complete with printable reference material and self paced learning available both online and in a CD format.

Specifically this program will focus on:

Module 1:  Introduction to Hydrogen – Response consideration for hydrogen that the emergency responders might come in contact with in their community.

Module 2:  Hydrogen Properties and Hazardous Behaviors – This module will provide you with information on how to identify the basic physical and chemical properties of hydrogen and its resultant hazardous behaviors as it relates to the first responder community.

Module 3:  Identifying Hydrogen in Your Community – This module will assist the responder in determining where hydrogen is present in a given situation. Identify stationary facilities, specialized containers, transportation vehicles transporting hydrogen and hydrogen powered vehicles.

Module 4:  Appropriate Response to a Hydrogen Incident – This module will lead participants through the continued scenario from Module 1 to safe mitigation and after action report.

 ‭(Hidden)‬ Phase Two Building

 Purpose

The purpose of phase two of the demonstration project is to design and implement an online distance learning training system, and its curriculum based on training first responders for hydrogen related incidents.  This system will be built on the foundation of information gathered into the Phase One report.

 Approach

While building the training system and its curriculum the project staff will continually reach out to stakeholders to ensure that the design and implementation of the course is a collaborative effort.  Sharing resources and expertise will be central to avoiding duplication of efforts and be at the forefront of the approach as design teams and focus groups are used throughout phase two, along with a request from proposal to gauge the available resources.
